Seedling Island

Working alongside two other designers, we were tasked to develop a material that could be more sustainable than using wood but still had durable qualities. We were suppose to use either coffee or cork, or a combination of both with different to combine with different ingredients to create a desired material. Out aim was a bio plastic of sorts that was durable to weather conditions, yet lightweight. We wanted to design something to facilitate the growth of seeds or seedlings, and that could float in water. We ended up finding that egg white was the best binder for cork, and used a ratio of them within a 3D printed mold to create the island of our design. We combined a casein base with coffee to design a bio plastic suitable for a tool to be used with the island.
